The Fundamentals
What is a Carbon Credit?
A carbon credit is a tradable certificate representing the removal or reduction of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases (CO₂e) from the atmosphere.
These credits are generated through verified activities such as forest protection and restoration projects, as well as improved agricultural or industrial practices. When businesses or individuals buy these credits, they’re essentially funding projects that fight climate change while balancing out their own carbon footprint—turning environmental responsibility into measurable action.

Project Types
Verified activities that generate credits
REDD+
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation.
IFM
Improved Forest Management — modifying traditional forest management practices to enhance the carbon sequestration capacity of forests.
ARR
Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation projects are crucial in the voluntary carbon market, focusing on restoring degraded lands and expanding forest covers.
The Carbon Market
How the market works
Carbon markets allow the buying and selling of carbon credits. These transactions take place on carbon exchanges, directly between parties, or through carbon brokers or offset platforms. Here’s how the process typically works.
- 1
Project Developer
Implements an emissions reduction or removal project.
- 2
Third-Party Verifiers
Validation & Verification Bodies (VVBs) assess and certify the project’s impact under a recognized carbon standard (Thailand’s TVER, Verra or Gold Standard).
- 3
Carbon Credits Issued
Credits are issued based on verified emission reductions.
- 4
Buyers
Corporates, governments, and individuals purchase these credits to offset their own carbon emissions.
